Sparks Fire Department Launches First-Ever Pet Food Drive with Nevada Humane Society

The Sparks Fire Department has teamed up with the Nevada Humane Society for its first-ever pet food drive, with donation bins now live at all six Sparks fire stations through May 31.
The partnership also has a second purpose beyond food: Sparks Fire crews are using pet microchip scanners to help identify lost animals and reunite them with their owners.
Bins are placed at the front of each of the six Sparks fire stations and are available during daylight hours. Donors are asked not to park in front of bay doors so crews can respond to emergencies without delay.
A full list of station locations is available on the City of Sparks website. For those unable to drop off in person, online donations can be made directly through the Nevada Humane Society’s website.
Accepted items include dry dog food, dry cat food, high-quality treats (especially soft and meaty varieties), and canned pumpkin puree.
Make sure it is plain pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling, as the latter contains ingredients that can harm animals.
Items that will not be accepted include used bedding, blankets, comforters, pillows, any medications, and sugar-free peanut butter. Sugar-free peanut butter typically contains xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
The Nevada Humane Society takes in roughly 10,000 animals a year, about half of which are dogs.
Donations collected during the drive will go directly toward feeding animals in the shelter’s care while they wait for adoption.
The drive runs through May 31.
