The Animal Foundation crossed into its “critical red capacity zone” over the weekend, telling the Las Vegas community it had 470 dogs on-site as of Sunday. Nevada’s largest animal shelter enters that danger zone once its dog population passes 454.

In response, the shelter launched a week-long emergency adoption push. Adoption fees are waived for dogs weighing 30 pounds or more through Sunday, August 9, and every adoption includes spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping, and a voucher for a free veterinary exam.

The shelter is also asking residents who cannot commit to a permanent adoption to consider a short-term, 14-day foster stay to free up kennel space immediately. Fosters and adopters can start at the shelter’s Foster Window, open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Officials say the overcrowding itself puts animals at risk, warning that dogs face more stress and illness spreads faster when kennels stay full. Staff and veterinary teams also have to stretch already limited resources further, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

This is not an isolated spike. Dog Friendly Las Vegas has tracked the shelter’s chronic overcrowding for months, including a June surge when the Animal Foundation took in more than 1,100 animals in less than two weeks.

The new emergency fee waiver also overlaps with the shelter’s participation in Clear the Shelters, the nationwide NBCUniversal adoption campaign running throughout August, which already waives fees on adult pets six months and older for the full month.

Residents who want to help but cannot adopt or foster can still make a difference. The Animal Foundation is asking supporters to share its Instagram post, choose one of its most urgent dogs for adoption, or donate supplies.

Anyone considering a medium or large dog, at least six months old and 35 pounds or more, is especially encouraged to visit this week. The shelter does not place holds on animals, and adoptions are handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
