Las Vegas police say they are aware of a video circulating online that appears to show a Metropolitan Police Department canine handler kicking his own police dog during an arrest.

The video captures a response near Tropicana Avenue and Boulder Highway on August 11, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The 35-second clip was posted Tuesday night on the Facebook page for LVEI, short for Las Vegas Emergency Incidents.

It shows a woman standing with her hands raised while an officer struggles with a barking K9 before striking the dog twice with his leg.

The officer then walks the dog toward the front of a patrol vehicle as the camera pans back to the woman.

LVEI posted a zoomed in version of the footage Wednesday and said it forwarded the video to Metro with a request that the department investigate the officer’s actions.

A Metro spokesperson confirmed Thursday that the department is aware of the incident but did not say whether an investigation is underway.

“LVMPD is aware of the incident depicted in the video,” the department said.

The video drew heavy reaction online, with nearly 150 comments, more than 175 likes, and over 85 shares as of Thursday morning.

Many commenters accused the officer of mistreating the dog and tagged Metro’s Facebook page directly in their posts.

The incident adds to a string of recent cases involving Las Vegas Valley police and their treatment of dogs.

In Henderson, a family is still pursuing a federal lawsuit over an officer’s fatal shooting of their boxer mix, a case that prompted a review of local police training oversight.

Metro has not said whether the officer seen in the new video will face discipline or remain on canine duty. Dog Friendly Las Vegas will continue to follow the story as more details become available.
