Dozens of animal advocates gathered Sunday outside a new dog training business that opened at the same Las Vegas location where Working Dogs of Nevada was investigated for animal abuse earlier this year.

The protest targeted Nevada Canine Training Academy, which has taken over the building near Lake Mead Boulevard and Tenaya Way that we reported on earlier this month.

The City of Las Vegas approved Nevada Canine’s business license with strict conditions attached, as we previously reported.

Owner Zachary Dickmeyer previously served as president of Working Dogs of Nevada Rescue, though he says he stepped away from that role before the abuse allegations surfaced and was never charged in the criminal case.

John Waudby, founder of Nevada Animal Advocates, led Sunday’s demonstration and said the community will not tolerate a repeat of past problems.

“It’s just a nonstop scene of animal abuse in Las Vegas,” Waudby said, reports FOX5 Las Vegas.

The protest traces back to a February video, recorded by a former Working Dogs of Nevada employee, that appeared to show a trainer dragging a dog and kicking his foot toward it.

Two employees were arrested on animal abuse charges after the video surfaced.

The trainer seen in the footage was deported before his case could be resolved, and prosecutors later dropped the charge against the second employee, citing insufficient evidence.

Working Dogs of Nevada shut down following the investigation, and its dogs were placed with other rescues, returned to their owners, or adopted into new homes.

In a statement, Dickmeyer said Nevada Canine is a separate business with its own ownership and operations, and that none of its current employees worked for Working Dogs of Nevada Rescue.

He said he has never been charged with or convicted of animal cruelty, and that his priority is the humane, responsible treatment of every dog in his care.

Waudby has also been a vocal supporter of Reba’s Law, the state measure that increased criminal penalties for animal cruelty.

Protesters say they intend to keep watching the new academy closely as it begins operating.
