Nevada will let you buy a bag of feed for your cattle tax-free, but pick up a bag of kibble for your dog and you’re paying sales tax on every dollar. A Clark County resident wants to change that, and the argument is hard to ignore.

The logic is simple: if feeding an animal is a necessity, the species should not determine the tax bill.

 

For Nevada pet owners, the cost of feeding an animal has never been cheap. Large bags of dry food can run $50 or more, and that number climbs fast for owners managing multiple pets, larger breeds, or dogs on prescription or specialty diets.

 

Nevada is home to roughly 1.3 million pet-owning households, and for many of them, food is one of the most consistent monthly expenses they face. A sales tax exemption would not be a windfall, but it would be real, recurring relief.

 

The broader conversation comes at a time when pet ownership is rising and the cost of animal care is climbing alongside it. Critics of the current tax structure argue that treating pet food as a luxury item is increasingly out of step with how most Nevadans actually live.
