Police Investigate Crash That Killed a Dog and Critically Injured Its Walker in Las Vegas on Sunday
A dog died and the man walking it suffered life-threatening injuries after both were struck by a vehicle in northwest Las Vegas on Sunday evening, reports FOX5 Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says the dog was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash happened at about 6:47 p.m. on North Buffalo Drive, north of Cobal Canyon Lane. Police say a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling south in the left lane when it hit the pedestrian and the dog.
Investigators say the man was crossing Buffalo Drive outside a marked or implied crosswalk while walking the dog. Both were thrown onto the roadway by the impact.
Emergency crews took the 43-year-old man to University Medical Center’s Trauma Center, where medical staff determined his injuries were life-threatening. His condition has not been updated.
The driver was not hurt. Police say the driver stayed at the scene, showed no signs of impairment, and cooperated with investigators.
The LVMPD Collision Investigation Section is still looking into the crash. No charges have been announced.
Sunset in Las Vegas now falls shortly after 6 p.m., which means evening walks increasingly happen in the dark.
Dog owners can lower the risk by crossing only at marked crosswalks or intersections, keeping dogs on a short leash near traffic, and wearing reflective gear or carrying a light.
A light-up or reflective collar and leash can also make a dog easier for drivers to see.
Owners who walk busy streets such as Buffalo Drive may want to choose routes with sidewalks, crosswalks, and good street lighting.
