Henderson City Council has approved an $8 million investment to renovate and expand the city’s Animal Protection Services facility, reports News 3 Las Vegas.

Council members voted in favor of the funding this week, with Mayor Michelle Romero calling it a step toward a safer, more modern shelter for the animals and residents who depend on it.

The money will fund new dog and cat quarantine areas, a dedicated dog isolation area, and a new isolation play yard.

The city also plans to replace kennels, upgrade the sewer system, and build new dog and cat impound rooms.

Medical facilities are getting a major expansion as well. The shelter’s medical suite will nearly double in size, and a new recovery suite will connect directly to it, giving sick or injured animals a smoother path from treatment to recovery.

The city will also add office space for Animal Protection Officers and the Public Response Team by repurposing an existing municipal building. That should free up room inside the shelter itself for animal care rather than staff operations.

This is a separate, additional investment from the $7 million upgrade plan Henderson approved in July 2025, which brought the shelter its first major overhaul in three decades.

We covered that earlier project in May, when the city was installing 100 new dog kennels and a donated solar panel system.

Henderson’s shelter is the only open-admission animal facility in the city, meaning it cannot turn animals away regardless of capacity.

On any given day it houses between 30 and 45 dogs and 20 to 40 cats, and officers responding to cruelty or hoarding cases can bring in large numbers with little notice.

The renovations come as Henderson’s population has grown roughly sixfold since the shelter was originally built, straining a facility that was never designed for today’s intake volume.

The city has not announced a construction timeline for the new $8 million round of work.

Henderson Animal Protection Services is located at 350 E. Galleria Drive and remains open for adoptions, fostering, and donations while the upgrades move forward.
