The National Weather Service has extended the Las Vegas Valley’s Extreme Heat Warning through 8 p.m. Sunday, pushing the deadline a full day past the Saturday cutoff reported earlier this week.

Rising humidity and returning monsoon moisture are now adding storm risk to an already dangerous stretch for dogs and their owners.

Thursday’s forecast high is 110 degrees, climbing to 112 on Friday. Saturday is expected to be the hottest day of the stretch at 113 degrees, before a slight dip to 111 on Sunday.

Overnight lows are only falling into the upper 80s and near 90 degrees, leaving little relief after dark for pets kept outside.

The National Weather Service warns of major to extreme heat risk across the region, with little to no overnight cooling expected.

Humidity is climbing alongside the heat this round, which makes it harder for dogs to cool themselves through panting.

Increasing monsoon moisture is also raising the chance of afternoon thunderstorms, mainly favoring the mountains, though forecasters say an isolated storm reaching the valley cannot be ruled out through the weekend.

That combination means dog owners should watch the sky as well as the thermometer on walks this weekend.

A sudden storm cell can bring lightning and flash flooding with little warning, even on an otherwise sunny, scorching afternoon.

The seven-second pavement test remains the simplest safety check. Press the back of your hand to the asphalt, and if you cannot hold it there, it is too hot for paws.

Walking dogs before 7 a.m. or after 8 p.m., carrying water on every outing, and never leaving a dog in a parked vehicle remain the most important precautions.

Watch for heavy panting, drooling, stumbling, or a dog that suddenly stops and refuses to move, since those are signs of heat stress rather than normal rest breaks.

The extended warning overlaps with The Animal Foundation’s emergency fee waiver, which also runs through Sunday, August 9.

Shelter officials have said the heat and the ongoing capacity crisis are compounding pressures on dogs waiting for homes.

Dog Friendly Las Vegas has tracked this heat wave since it began in late July and will continue to report on the warning as conditions change. Temperatures are expected to begin easing early next week, with highs dropping toward 104 degrees by Wednesday.
