Nevada Senate Candidate Sends Voters Mailer Focused on Animal Cruelty and Puppy Mills

A Nevada State Senate candidate has sent voters a long-form campaign letter focused entirely on animal cruelty, illegal breeding, and tougher enforcement, skipping the usual talking points on taxes and crime in favour of a deep dive on pet welfare.

George Harris, running for State Senate, is calling for felony charges for serious animal abuse, heavy fines to shut down illegal breeding operations, jail time for those involved in dog fighting, surprise inspections, and permanent bans for repeat offenders.

Harris says concerns about animal protection come up regularly when he speaks with voters. He argues the issue is not just about animals but about accountability and what kind of community Nevada is building.

The letter references real enforcement numbers.

In 2025, the City of Las Vegas issued dozens of citations to illegal backyard breeders and removed multiple dogs from unsafe conditions.

Just last month, authorities removed dozens more animals from questionable facilities, a clear nod to the Working Dogs of Nevada case.

Harris is calling for a system of surprise inspections and real enforcement, arguing that abuse continues largely because facilities can operate behind closed doors without meaningful oversight.

He wants repeat offenders permanently banned from owning or working with animals.

His proposals go beyond existing Nevada law, which advocacy groups have long argued does not go far enough to deter serious cruelty.
