# Reno Neighbors Sue to Stop Construction of New Damonte Ranch Dog Park

A group of Damonte Ranch residents has filed a lawsuit seeking to halt construction of a new dog park at Damonte Ranch Park in south Reno.

 

The suit, filed Monday, asks a judge for a temporary restraining order and an injunction while questions about how the project was approved get sorted out.

 

Reno City Council approved the dog park at a meeting on July 22. Neighbors say they did not learn about the project until crews had already broken ground.

 

“The first time we learned that there was a dog park going in was after some of these folks were already going into the ground,” resident Jeff Hurlbert [told KRNV](https://mynews4.com/news/local/lawsuit-seeks-to-halt-damonte-ranch-park-dog-park-construction-amid-community-concerns).

 

“None of us heard anything about what was happening until the construction started.”

 

Hurlbert and neighbor Chris Gabrys began collecting signatures and filing public records requests after learning of the project.

 

A petition attached to the lawsuit asks the city to stop construction immediately, preserve the existing open lawn, and relocate the dog park elsewhere.

 

Court documents show the project initially skipped review by the Damonte Ranch Architectural and Landscape Committee, a required step.

 

The committee later reviewed the plans and issued conditional approval, requiring changes to the fencing and a relocated entrance.

 

The lawsuit also cites concerns over parking and the loss of open green space in the neighborhood.

 

Hurlbert said some of the residents’ public records requests have been delayed for months, with the city telling him he may not receive some documents until November.

 

Not every neighbor opposes the project. Some residents have posted support on Facebook, including one commenter who said they would rather see a second dog park nearby than more housing development, as long as large and small dogs are kept separate.

 

The city of Reno has said it is working with the architectural committee to bring the project into compliance and intends to finish construction. The lawsuit is now awaiting court review.
