The Animal Foundation is running a short-term foster drive through July 5, asking community members to take a medium or large shelter dog home for the holiday weekend to get the animal out of a noisy kennel and into a quiet space during fireworks.

The initiative, which began June 29, requires no long-term commitment. The shelter provides food, a crate, a collar, a leash, and basic supplies.

Participants can visit the foster window in the adoption lobby at 655 N. Mojave Road to be matched with a dog.

The Fourth of July is [reports 8 News Now](https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/how-to-help-as-animal-shelters-in-las-vegas-brace-for-influx-of-lost-pets-during-fourth-of-july/) the single busiest intake period of the year for Las Vegas animal shelters, with fireworks sending frightened dogs bolting through fences and gates.

Last year, the foundation took in 549 animals in the first ten days of July. Only 89 were ever returned to their owners.

To help owners whose dogs do escape, the Animal Foundation is also waiving all pet reclaim fees from July 1 through July 10.

Proof of ownership is required, and lost dogs must be held for 72 hours before they can be reclaimed.

Owners can register a missing pet at [lost.petcolove.org](https://lost.petcolove.org) or search the foundation’s online lost and found database.

For those who miss the foster window or cannot bring a dog home, the Animal Foundation is waiving adoption fees on all large adult dogs from July 7 through July 15 as part of the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s [Empty the Shelters](https://dogfriendlylasvegas.com/dog-news/local-dog-news/bissell-pet-foundations-empty-the-shelters-event-returns-to-the-animal-foundation/) nationwide campaign.

Dog owners heading into the holiday weekend should also confirm that their pet’s microchip registration is current.

The foundation notes that the low reunion rate during Fourth of July week is directly tied to pets arriving at shelters without microchips or with outdated contact information.
