Social Media Prank Turns Fatal for Family Dog in Florida Case

A Florida teenager has been arrested after a social media–inspired prank resulted in the death of a family dog, highlighting growing concerns about viral challenges and the unintended — and sometimes irreversible — consequences they can carry for people and animals alike.

According to reporting by People.com, a 14-year-old was arrested on January 27 in Volusia County, Florida, in connection with the death of a 3-year-old Yorkshire terrier named Spookie. Authorities say the teen participated in a so-called “door-kicking prank,” part of a circulating social media challenge, which caused a home’s front door to be forced open.

With the door broken, Spookie escaped the house and was later struck and killed by a passing vehicle.

What Happened

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says the incident occurred on December 20, 2025, after a group of juveniles attended a nearby party and went out into the neighborhood playing what investigators described as “ding dong ditch.” Surveillance footage reportedly captured audio of repeated kicks to the door, which eventually gave way.

Investigators identified the teen believed to be responsible for kicking the door open, leading to felony and misdemeanor charges including burglary and criminal mischief. The arrest took place at the teen’s school.

Spookie’s owner, Dissany Cid of Deltona, Florida, was not home at the time of the incident. Speaking to local station WESH, she said the loss of her dog has been devastating.

“I don’t care about my door,” Cid said in the interview. “But he didn’t deserve that.”
