I Stopped at the New Wendover Dog Park — Worth the Detour?

If you’re driving through Wendover, whether on your way between Reno and Salt Lake City or checking out a Bonneville racing event, there’s a new spot in town that promises to be a welcome stop for dog owners. 

The city’s new Wendover Dog Park, located conveniently near two of the local casinos and within walking distance of the KOA campground, is open and usable now, with plenty more improvements on the way.

As of mid-March, the park is fully fenced and features designated areas for small and large dogs, each with double-gated entries for added safety. 

Pet waste bag stations are already in place for both sections, and seating is available for pet parents who want to relax while their dogs play.

Water is also available on-site, though at this stage it’s best to bring your own bowl. The water system will eventually connect to a permanent fountain, according to early design plans posted by the city.

The park shows clear signs of being in its early development phase, with several newly planted trees promising future shade around two main seating areas.

City markers and site diagrams indicate coming upgrades, including expanded play spaces, additional grass patches, and shaded pergolas for both the small and large dog zones.

Some pre-dug holes already outline the next round of plantings, showing steady progress even as the park remains accessible to the public. 

Seating includes both benches and a few picnic-style tables, giving locals and travelers options to linger longer.

During our recent visit on March 18, 2026, the park was clean and functional, though a few goatheads had blown in from nearby open lots. 

The city’s parks department has been working to manage these seasonal weeds, which tend to appear before early summer growth sets in.

Wendover continues to see a mix of dog-owning visitors thanks to its vibrant travel scene, including five casinos, a recreational dispensary, and a steady flow of I-80 traffic between western Nevada and Utah. 

The town’s compact layout makes it an easy stop for anyone traveling with pets, especially since most major points of interest are within a short drive.

Just beyond Wendover lies the Bonneville Salt Flats, a world-famous stretch of salt that hosts annual land speed events and draws thousands of visitors every summer. 

Whether you’re attending Speed Week, hitting a local car show, or simply passing through, the new Wendover Dog Park adds another reason to pause, stretch, and let your dog enjoy a safe and friendly space before the next leg of the trip.
