Lost 82-Year-Old Woman Found Safe Thanks to Her Dog’s Loyalty and Quick Thinking

An 82-year-old Oregon woman who went missing during freezing winter temperatures was found alive late Monday night, thanks to the quiet determination of her dog, Cami.

According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office in Lookout coverage, the woman disappeared on December 29 near Elmira, Oregon. As search teams spread through rural roads, trails, and wooded dead ends, few expected the family’s blue heeler to play a central role in the rescue.

Cami, an Australian cattle dog known for being calm and rarely barking, stayed with her owner as temperatures dropped below freezing. Authorities say the dog kept the woman warm through the night and ultimately helped searchers locate them both.

A Bark That Changed Everything

Search and Rescue volunteer Katie Sciotto had been told not to expect a response if she called out for the pair. The woman lives with dementia, and Cami was not known to vocalize.

After hours of searching in darkness, Sciotto decided to call the dog’s name anyway.

About 300 yards away, a faint bark cut through the night.

Searchers followed the sound, tripping through rough terrain until they reached the pair. Cami was found lying directly on top of her owner, helping preserve body heat in near-freezing conditions.

Rescuers later confirmed the woman was suffering from hypothermia and was transported to a hospital for further care.

“Without Cami, we likely would not have found her,” Sciotto said.

“The dog really did save her life.”

A Reluctant Hero Leaves Her Post

While rescue teams treated the woman on site, Cami remained close, wagging her tail and licking rescuers’ hands. The dog grew anxious as additional teams arrived with radios and headlamps, reluctant to leave her owner’s side.

As a reward for her vigilance, Cami was given slices of cheese from the rescuers’ emergency supplies — a small thank-you for a night that could have ended very differently.
