UK Woman Stabs Estranged Husband After Learning Rescue Dogs Were Euthanized

A court case in Norfolk, England, has drawn international attention to the emotional impact of rescue pets in family disputes. In July 2025, 64-year-old Claire Bridger allegedly stabbed her estranged husband, Keith Bridger, after discovering he had euthanized the couple’s two rescue dachshunds.

The incident occurred outside Keith Bridger’s home, where neighbors reported hearing Claire screaming, “he killed my dogs,” as authorities arrived. Keith Bridger, who had retained custody of the dogs following the couple’s separation, sustained life-threatening injuries but survived.

Rescue Dogs at the Center of the Dispute

The dachshunds had been adopted in March 2020 and approximately one year later. Court testimony indicated the dogs had behavioral challenges, and after failed attempts to rehome them, Keith Bridger decided to have the dogs euthanized. Claire Bridger testified that she was unaware of the decision and described feeling “an explosion in my head” upon learning of the euthanasia.

According to reports covered by the NY Post, Claire Bridger did not intend to kill her husband but admitted she acted with intent to cause harm. She also cited a combination of stress and alcohol use at the time of the incident.

Legal Outcome

Following a five-day trial at Norwich Crown Court, a jury found Claire Bridger not guilty of attempted murder but convicted her of wounding with intent. She is scheduled to be sentenced on March 20, 2026.

Expert Perspective

Animal welfare professionals note that rescue pets can play an integral role in households and that disputes over their care can create high-stress situations. Behavioral issues in rescue dogs, separation or divorce arrangements, and lack of clear pet care agreements can complicate decisions about rehoming or euthanasia.

The Bridger case highlights the importance of communication and planning when caring for rescue dogs, particularly during family transitions. Experts recommend consulting veterinarians, behavior specialists, or local rescue organizations for guidance in managing pets with special needs.

Key Takeaways for Pet Owners

  • Rescue dogs often require additional support and training.
  • Euthanasia decisions should be made with full consideration of alternatives, including rescue or rehoming.
  • Clear agreements regarding pet care during separation or divorce can help prevent misunderstandings and protect both animals and family members.
