A single act of generosity could create years of lifesaving impact for some of Southern Nevada’s most overlooked shelter dogs.
Hearts Alive Village has launched its new Golden Hearts Midnight Coats campaign following a $10,000 stock donation from supporter Deborah Reed, inspired by her own beloved dogs, Storm and Wilson. Now, the nonprofit is inviting the community to help raise an additional $10,000 by the end of December. If that goal is reached, Reed has pledged to match the campaign, potentially doubling its impact for each of the next five years.
The initiative is designed to shine a light on two groups of dogs that are often overlooked in shelters: senior dogs and black-coated dogs, while providing them with the resources and advocacy needed to help them find loving homes.
Giving Overlooked Dogs a Better Chance
Every dog deserves the opportunity to find a family, but adoption trends often mean some dogs wait much longer than others.
Senior dogs are frequently passed over in favor of younger puppies, even though they often arrive with established personalities, basic manners, and calmer temperaments. Many simply need someone willing to look beyond their age.
Black-coated dogs have also long been associated with what many in animal welfare refer to as “Black Dog Syndrome”, the observation that black dogs may spend longer waiting for adoption than dogs with lighter-colored coats. While research has produced mixed findings and adoption patterns vary among shelters, many rescue organizations continue to see black dogs receive less attention from potential adopters.
Through the Golden Hearts Midnight Coats campaign, Hearts Alive Village hopes to change those outcomes by investing in the care, visibility, and advocacy that help these deserving dogs stand out.
More Than Medical Care
Donations to the campaign will support programs designed to improve both the health and adoptability of senior and black dogs, including:
- Professional photo sessions that showcase each dog’s personality.
- Veterinary care and medical treatment.
- Grooming and preparation for adoption.
- Daily care and enrichment.
- Advocacy and outreach to help connect dogs with potential adopters.
By addressing both physical needs and public visibility, Hearts Alive Village aims to give these dogs every possible opportunity to find their forever homes.
A Community Challenge With Long-Term Potential
The campaign begins with Deborah Reed’s generous $10,000 stock donation, but its greatest impact may still lie ahead.
If the community raises an additional $10,000 by the end of December, Hearts Alive Village says Reed will match the campaign, creating the opportunity to double donations for each of the next five years. That long-term commitment could provide sustained support for future senior and black dogs entering the organization’s care, helping fund everything from medical treatment to adoption marketing and enrichment.
For supporters, it’s an opportunity to be part of something that extends well beyond a single fundraising campaign.

The Golden Hearts Midnight Coats campaign is a reminder that sometimes the dogs who wait the longest simply need someone willing to see what makes them special. Through community support, and the potential for years of matching donations, Hearts Alive Village hopes more senior and black dogs will get the second chance they deserve.
