Las Vegas Community Partners Build Lifesaving Shade Structure for Hearts Alive Village Dogs

In Las Vegas, where summer temperatures can push well above 100 degrees for weeks at a time, creating safe outdoor spaces for shelter and rescue dogs requires more than just good intentions, it requires planning, resources, and a community willing to step up.

That is exactly what happened at Hearts Alive Village, where an anonymous donor, Martin-Harris Construction, and Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) recently came together to create a major improvement for dogs waiting for their forever homes at the organization’s Decatur campus.

The new industrial-grade shade structure at the Joseph Mayo Rehabilitation Retreat’s dog play yards will provide lasting protection from the intense Southern Nevada sun, giving dogs a safer and more comfortable place to exercise, decompress, and continue their journey toward adoption.

The project represents more than a construction upgrade. It is a reminder of what can happen when individuals and businesses bring their resources together to support local animal welfare organizations.

A Community Solution to a Las Vegas Heat Challenge

The dog play yards at Hearts Alive Village serve an important role in the rehabilitation and adoption process. They provide dogs with time outside their kennels, opportunities to socialize, and spaces where potential adopters can connect with them.

But protecting those spaces from the Las Vegas heat has been an ongoing challenge.

According to Hearts Alive Village, the organization had been working on shade solutions since the yards were built, including adding pergolas and planting trees. While those efforts helped, the extreme conditions of Southern Nevada summers required a more permanent solution.

An anonymous donor helped make that next step possible by providing the funding needed to purchase a 20-foot by 42-foot industrial-grade shade structure designed to withstand the demanding conditions near the North Las Vegas airport corridor.

However, purchasing the structure was only the beginning. Installing it required significant preparation, including ten large concrete footings, excavation, heavy equipment, rebar, sonotubes, backfill, and professional concrete work.

That is where local businesses stepped in.

Martin-Harris Construction Brings Expertise to the Project

Martin-Harris Construction has been part of Southern Nevada’s construction landscape for decades, delivering projects across commercial, hospitality, healthcare, education, and public sectors.

For this project, members of the company’s concrete team, Jonathan, Jimmy, Jesus, Chuey, and their crew, donated their time and expertise to complete the complex foundation work required for the shade structure.

The installation required precision and experience to ensure the structure would be secure and able to withstand the harsh Las Vegas environment.

Their contribution transformed a donated structure into a permanent improvement that will benefit countless dogs at Hearts Alive Village for years to come.

UES Helps Ensure the Project Was Built Right

Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) also played an important role by donating professional inspection services throughout the installation process.

UES provides engineering, environmental, and inspection services that help ensure construction projects meet safety and quality standards.

By donating their expertise, the UES team helped verify that each phase of the project was completed properly, adding another layer of support to a project centered around animal safety and community care.

Together, Martin-Harris Construction and UES helped turn a generous donation into a finished space that will provide comfort, protection, and enrichment for rescue dogs.

Paw Prints Leave a Lasting Reminder of the Mission

One of the most meaningful moments of the project came before the concrete cured.

Several adoptable dogs at Hearts Alive Village placed their paw prints into the freshly poured concrete footings, creating a permanent reminder of why the community came together in the first place.

Those paw prints represent the dogs who will benefit from this improved space, and the many others still waiting for their chance at a new beginning.

Supporting the Rescue Community Beyond Donations

The new shade structure at Hearts Alive Village is an example of how many different forms of support can make a meaningful impact.

A donor provided the funding. Skilled professionals provided the labor and expertise. A nonprofit provided the mission and the daily care. Together, they created a solution that will improve the lives of rescue dogs every day.

For those who want to support local animal welfare organizations, financial donations are only one option. Community members can also help by volunteering, fostering, sharing adoptable pets, offering professional skills, or encouraging businesses to become involved.
