Dog Dies, Woman Hospitalized After House Fire in Western Las Vegas Valley

A dog died and a woman suffered second-degree burns in a two-alarm house fire that broke out Tuesday in the western Las Vegas Valley.

The woman was taken to University Medical Center’s trauma unit for treatment, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at 11:50 a.m. in the 8800 block of Clear Blue Drive, near West Desert Inn Road and South Fort Apache Road, according to Las Vegas Fire Department spokesperson Jordan Moore.

The first crew arrived within four minutes and the blaze was quickly upgraded to two alarms.

“Unfortunately, one dog succumbed during the incident,” Moore said.

Firefighters gave an all-clear at 12:28 p.m., but crews remained on scene into the afternoon, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

A neighbor who lives four houses down said he heard sirens heading into the neighborhood shortly before noon and later saw people carrying dogs away from the home.

The house next to the one that burned was also blackened with soot and had a window blown out.

Investigators are still working to determine which property caught fire first and what caused the blaze. The American Red Cross is assisting the residents affected.

The Clear Blue Drive fire is at least the second house fire this year in the Las Vegas Valley to claim a dog’s life.

In June, a fire at a Mountain’s Edge home killed two dogs while the family was on vacation, and a similar blaze earlier this year prompted North Las Vegas firefighters to rescue two dogs from an early morning house fire.

Dog owners in Las Vegas are urged to keep pet rescue alert stickers visible near entry points and to include animals in any home evacuation plan.

Working smoke detectors and clear pathways to doors can make the difference in getting pets out safely during a fire.
