More than 1,000 shelter pets found new homes across the Las Vegas Valley in June, according to new figures released by The Animal Foundation.

Dogs accounted for 417 of those adoptions, alongside 499 cats and 87 other animals, reports Fox5 Las Vegas.

The shelter also placed 310 pets into foster care, transferred 284 animals to partner organizations, and reunited 341 pets with their families through reclaims.

Support for struggling pet owners continued behind the scenes. The foundation’s KEPP pantry provided pet food to 1,012 families in June, while 277 volunteers contributed 5,320 hours of service.

The strong month follows a concerted push by the shelter to move animals into homes ahead of the summer crush.

That effort included the No Place Like Home free adoption weekend on June 27 and June 28, which waived fees for all pets, including puppies and kittens.

The June numbers arrive at a time when the shelter needs every open kennel it can get.

Dog surrenders in Las Vegas hit a ten year high last year, and the shelter took in 93 animals over the July 4 weekend alone as fireworks sent frightened pets running.

Fostering, volunteering, and donations to the KEPP pantry all remain options for supporting the shelter without a long-term commitment.
