When a beloved dog leaves a family, there is no replacing the space they leave behind. But sometimes, their memory can become a way of helping another dog find the love they once knew.

That is what the Geertsen family is doing for senior dogs at City of Henderson Animal Protection Services.

After losing Tilly, the family reached out to Friends of Henderson Animal Support (FOHAS) with a donation in her memory. Rather than letting that gift simply mark a loss, they chose to use it to help other dogs have the kind of happy ending Tilly had.

Throughout August, adoption fees are sponsored for all senior dogs at the Henderson shelter, giving dogs age seven and older a little extra help finding their way home.

Tilly was described by her family as beautiful, silly and full of life and love, a dog who brought tremendous happiness to the people who loved her. Now, her memory is helping create an opportunity for other senior dogs to experience that same kind of family.

Senior dogs can be easy to overlook in a shelter. They may not have the boundless energy of a puppy or the novelty of a younger dog, but what they offer can be just as valuable: companionship, personality and, often, a lifetime of experience being someone’s beloved friend.

For anyone considering adoption, August is an especially meaningful time to meet the senior dogs at Henderson Animal Protection Services.

And adoption isn’t the only way to help. Sharing the opportunity can put these dogs in front of someone who may be looking for exactly the companion they need.

A donation made in memory of one dog is now opening doors for many others.
