Pleistocene Palooza Brings Ice Age Las Vegas to Life With a Dog-Friendly Fossil Day
Long before Las Vegas became known for its bright lights and desert landscapes, mammoths and other Ice Age animals roamed the region. On Saturday, October 17th, visitors can explore that prehistoric past at Pleistocene Palooza, a free, dog-friendly outdoor event hosted at Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument in celebration of National Fossil Day.
Running from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the annual event invites visitors of all ages to get closer to paleontology through fossils, live animals, hands-on learning and opportunities to meet scientists. Itβs also a chance to discover the ancient history beneath the desert landscape many Las Vegas residents know today.
Meet The Science Behind Ice Age Las Vegas
Pleistocene fossils found at Tule Springs date from approximately 100,000 to 12,500 years ago, offering clues about the animals and environments that existed here during the last Ice Age. At Pleistocene Palooza, National Park Service staff, volunteers and community partners will help visitors explore what those discoveries reveal about the past and how scientists study it.
Activities include getting up close with fossils, meeting scientists and participating in a Junior Paleontologist Program. Live animals will also help bring the experience to life, offering a look at present-day species that can help visitors connect with the wildlife of earlier eras.
The event is part of National Fossil Day, an annual October observance highlighting the scientific and educational value of paleontology and the importance of preserving fossils for future generations.
A Free, Dog-Friendly Day Outdoors
Pleistocene Palooza is open to all ages and free to attend, making it an accessible option for families, curious adults and anyone interested in the natural history of the Las Vegas Valley. Dogs are welcome, too, so visitors can bring their canine companions along for the outdoor outing.
The event will take place in the parking area at North Durango Drive and West Moccasin Road. Visitor parking will be available on the northeast side of the intersection.
For those who have driven past the monument or explored the surrounding desert without realizing how much history lies beneath it, Pleistocene Palooza offers a lively introduction to the regionβs prehistoric past.
