Dog Dies and Resident Suffers Hand Burns in Clark County Townhouse Fire Near Desert Inn and Sandhill
A dog died and one person was hurt after a fire tore through the first floor of a townhouse near Desert Inn and Sandhill roads in Clark County earlier this month.
Firefighters found the dog during a search of the home’s second floor, the Clark County Fire Department said, as reported by News 3 Las Vegas.
Crews notified Animal Protective Services after finding the dog. Officials have not released the dog’s breed or name.
The call came in at about 12:30 PM on Wednesday, October 7.
Two people who lived in the home got out on their own and reported the fire before crews arrived.
One of them suffered burns to a hand and was taken to a local emergency room. No other injuries were reported.
The fire started in the end unit of a row of two-story attached townhouses.
Firefighters went in through the garage, where they ran into dark smoke and found the entire first floor burning.
As conditions outside the building got worse, crews called for a second alarm and changed their approach to the fire.
They were able to knock the fire down, and the second alarm was canceled.
The flames stayed inside the one unit and did not spread to any of the neighboring townhomes.
A total of 46 fire personnel responded, including seven engines, two trucks, two rescue units, two battalion chiefs, and an air resource unit.
Las Vegas Fire and Rescue helped the county department at the scene.
Two fire investigators were also sent to the townhouse. The department has not said what caused the fire.
It was not the first fire this year to claim a pet’s life in the Las Vegas Valley.
In July, a dog died and a woman was taken to UMC Trauma Center with second-degree burns after a house fire in the 8800 block of Clear Blue Drive, near Desert Inn and Fort Apache, Fox5 reported at the time.
In that case, the fire spread from a casita to the house next door, and Las Vegas Fire and Rescue upgraded the call to a two-alarm fire.
The loss in October follows other recent tragedies for local dog owners.
On October 11, police investigated a crash on North Buffalo Drive that killed a dog and critically injured the man walking it.
Neither the fire department nor local news outlets have released the names of the residents or an update on the injured person’s condition.
