The Alexis Project: Changing the Future for Pit Bulls in Las Vegas

Pit bulls have always been one of the most misunderstood dog breeds. Despite their reputation for strength, what pit bull–type dogs are truly known for — at least to those who share their homes with them — is loyalty, affection, and an almost comical desire to be lap dogs no matter their size. They’re goofy, family-loving companions.

But here’s the reality: pit bulls are also one of the most at-risk breeds in shelters. Overcrowding, unwanted litters, and unfair stereotypes mean too many never get the second chance they deserve. That’s why initiatives like The Alexis Project matter so much.

A Growing Movement in the Fight Against Overpopulation

The Alexis Project started with an incredible $15,000 matching gift from animal advocate Linda Faso, dedicated to helping pit bulls in our community through affordable spay and neuter surgeries. And now? The impact is nearly doubled thanks to angel donor Joe Mayo, who just added $10,000 to the effort.

That means we’re only $5,000 away from unlocking the full matching challenge extended by Faso’s generosity — and doubling the impact The Alexis Project can have.

How Families Can Get Help

If you’re a pit bull parent in Las Vegas, The Alexis Project can help you access low-cost spay or neuter for your dog:

  1. Complete a quick form with your dog’s info (link here).
  2. A Hearts Alive Village team member will follow up and provide a link to schedule.
  3. Pay a small deposit based on your dog’s weight, and The Alexis Project covers the rest.
  • Neuters: $66–$116
  • Spays: $81–$151

Affordable, straightforward, and lifesaving — not just for your dog, but for countless others who won’t end up in overcrowded shelters.

Why Pit Bull Awareness Matters

Every October, communities across the country recognize National Pit Bull Awareness Day (October 25, 2025). The day is about more than celebration — it’s about education. It’s a chance to set the record straight:

  • Pit bulls are not inherently aggressive. They’re individuals, shaped by their upbringing, environment, and training — just like any dog.
  • They thrive on structure, exercise, and positive reinforcement.
  • With proper care, they’re fantastic family dogs, therapy animals, and adventure buddies.

Awareness matters because stigma has consequences. Negative stereotypes make it harder for pit bulls to get adopted and even influence housing rules that separate families from their beloved pets.

Why This Matters for Vegas

In a city where shelters are often stretched to capacity, reducing unwanted litters is critical. Spay and neuter programs like The Alexis Project don’t just save lives — they create breathing room for shelters and rescues, allowing them to place more dogs into loving homes.

And here’s the best part: this program honors a beloved pitty; Alexis’ legacy, turning loss into lasting change.

Join the Movement

Pit bulls don’t need saving because they’re “dangerous.” They need saving because they’ve been misunderstood. They need champions who see their true nature: resilient, loving, and worthy of a future.

You can be part of the solution. Whether by donating, spreading the word, or helping your own pit bull get the care they deserve, your actions ripple outward.

Help give pit bulls the chance to live the lives they were meant to have.
