An animal advocacy group has filed a formal complaint against the Clark County District Attorney’s Office over its handling of the Working Dogs of Nevada abuse case, reports Fox5 Las Vegas.

The complaint follows the deportation of the primary suspect and the dismissal of charges against his co-defendant.

The filing marks the first formal accountability step since the case effectively collapsed in late June.

As we reported at the time, no prosecution is planned after trainer John Johnstone was deported to Scotland and charges against Tabitha Berube were dropped for what the DA called insufficient evidence.

The case began when a facility worker identified as Kerrigan started recording what she described as questionable training practices on her phone.

That footage appeared to show Johnstone dragging a dog and kicking toward it, and police later obtained surveillance video from the facility itself.

The dismissal outraged advocates who believed the video evidence would hold up in court.

John Waudby, founder of Nevada Animal Advocates and a supporter of Reba’s Law, has been among the most vocal critics of the outcome.

The dogs at the center of the case have largely found closure.

Dottie, the dog named in the police report as having been lifted by her leash and swung during training, was reunited with her owner earlier this year, and the remaining seized dogs were adopted out, transferred to rescues, or returned to their owners through The Animal Foundation.

Their months in limbo were the subject of our earlier examination of how Nevada’s animal laws failed the 31 dogs held as evidence.

Johnstone remains in Scotland with a bench warrant pending, meaning he faces arrest only if he returns to the United States. Working Dogs of Nevada has permanently closed.

What comes of the formal complaint remains to be seen, but it keeps public pressure on prosecutors in a case many saw as a test of Nevada’s strengthened animal cruelty laws.
