The Dayton Valley Dog Park’s All Breed Area officially reopened on Saturday, August 8, after months of renovation work replaced roughly 9,000 square feet of worn turf.

Local dog owners gathered to celebrate the reopening while a food truck served lunch and dogs tried out the new grass, reports the Comstock Chronicle.

Crews removed 6 to 8 inches of old turf and rock, checked the sprinkler system for proper coverage, brought in a new soil blend, and installed Tall Fescue sod chosen to hold up better against heavy foot and paw traffic.

The project was funded through the Brown Family Foundation and completed by Cassinelli Landscaping and Construction as the second phase of a larger renovation that began in 2025.

Crews also repaired benches, fixed a donation collection tube, and removed a dead tree during the closure.

Dayton Valley Dog Park is a nonprofit, volunteer-run park on 2.6 fenced acres next to Como Park in Dayton, roughly 30 miles east of Reno in Lyon County.

We’ve followed Lyon County’s animal welfare efforts closely this year, including Lyon County Animal Services’ recent push to move dogs out of its overcrowded Silver Springs shelter, and this dog park sits in the same county, though it’s run independently of the shelter system.

Work at the park continues beyond the newly finished All Breed Area, with crews still refreshing rock planter areas, stabilizing the ground beneath section gates, repainting handicap parking spaces, and building out a memorial brick tribute area.

Park users have also asked for pergola-style shade structures and permanent water fountains, though the latter would require county approval before moving forward.
