Henderson Animal Protection Services has reached a 91% live release rate so far in fiscal year 2026, surpassing the industry benchmark of 90% and marking the agency’s best recorded performance in at least three years.
The department credited staff, volunteers, community partners, and city leadership for the gains.
The shelter has recorded 1,829 adoptions so far this year, following 2,667 adoptions across all of fiscal year 2025.

Officials say 2,664 animals have been saved year to date, compared with 3,650 saved during the full fiscal year 2025.
The agency also reunited 522 pets with their families so far this year, on pace to match the 694 reunions completed during fiscal year 2025.
Shelter occupancy held at 53% during both the second and third quarters of fiscal year 2025, down from 68% in the first quarter.
Lower occupancy means more space for incoming animals, shorter stays, and better outcomes for the dogs and cats in the facility.
The live release rate has climbed steadily: 84% in fiscal year 2024, 87% in fiscal year 2025, and 91% year to date in fiscal year 2026.
The shelter is also due for its first major facility upgrades in 30 years, including a donated solar panel system valued at a quarter million dollars and the replacement of 100 dog kennels.
The upgrades come as Henderson’s population has grown roughly six times larger than it was when the facility was built, according to Fox5 Las Vegas.
