Henderson has confirmed a state investigation into Police Chief Reggie Rader and Deputy Chief Matt Murnane, and Murnane has been placed on administrative leave while the inquiry moves forward.

The city asked Nevada’s Department of Public Safety to run the investigation instead of keeping it inside the department, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The specific allegations that triggered the probe have not been made public.

Murnane is a familiar name to Las Vegas dog owners who have followed the case of Bruno, the boxer mix a Henderson officer shot and killed during a wellness check in September 2025.

We have followed that case closely, from the department’s admission that it failed to fully track state-required dog encounter training, to Bruno’s owner filing a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city, Rader, Murnane, and individual officers in July.

That lawsuit accuses Henderson of allowing officers to use deadly force against non-aggressive dogs without adequate training or oversight.

Murnane had previously acknowledged in February that the department’s tracking of dog encounter training had not been fully applied as intended, and said Henderson worked to correct the gap.

The state investigation is separate from the Bruno lawsuit, but it adds fresh scrutiny to the same command staff already named as defendants in that case.

Nevada’s Office of Professional Responsibility, based in Carson City, handles independent investigations into misconduct across state law enforcement, and outside agencies typically step in when allegations reach a department’s own top leadership.

Rader has led Henderson police for just over a year after being sworn in in July 2025, following the ouster of his predecessor.

Henderson officials have not detailed a timeline for when findings from the state investigation might become public.
