A Las Vegas woman thought her dog was dead. Six years after Lucy slipped through a backyard gate and vanished, a microchip proved her wrong.
Diana’s dog disappeared in 2019 when she was just four years old. Diana searched for weeks, posting flyers and sharing Lucy’s photo across social media, but found nothing.
That changed when Lucy was brought to The Animal Foundation as a stray. Shelter staff scanned her microchip, found Diana’s contact information, and made the call that reunited them after six years apart.
“I thought Lucy was dead,” Diana told the shelter. “She was four when I lost her. She’s ten now. That’s why you microchip your pets.”
The Animal Foundation shared the reunion story on social media as a reminder of what microchipping can do, as reported by Fox5 Las Vegas.
Shelter officials also urged pet owners to keep their contact information current in the microchip registry, since an outdated phone number or address can prevent a reunion even when a chip is scanned.
Lucy’s story comes as The Animal Foundation is managing one of its most crowded stretches in recent memory, with more than 1,100 animals taken in during the first 12 days of June alone.
The shelter is the only open-admission facility in Clark County, meaning it cannot turn any animal away.
Pet owners can update their microchip contact information through the chip manufacturer’s registry or through the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup tool.
The Animal Foundation microchips all animals adopted through the shelter as part of their standard adoption package.
