The National Weather Service has extended the Las Vegas Valley’s Extreme Heat Warning once more, pushing the deadline to 8 p.m. Monday, August 10. It is at least the third extension of a warning that was originally due to expire days ago.

Forecast highs are expected to reach between 110 and 115 degrees across the valley through Monday, according to the NWS bulletin.

Overnight lows are only dropping into the upper 80s, leaving little relief after dark for dogs kept outside.

The continued stretch keeps Las Vegas within range of the 11 consecutive day record for highs at or above 110 degrees, a mark set in July 2024.

Southern Nevada has already logged multiple triple digit days in a row heading into this week, and forecasters have said the region has a real chance of tying or breaking that streak.

Adding to the risk, storms carrying lightning and gusty winds are possible Sunday evening into Monday, reports 8 News Now.

A sudden storm cell can arrive with little warning even on an otherwise scorching, sunny afternoon.

Dog owners should keep following basic heat safety steps during the extended warning. Press the back of your hand to the pavement for seven seconds, and if you cannot hold it there, the ground is too hot for your dog’s paws.

Walking dogs before 7 a.m. or after 8 p.m. remains the safest option, and grass is always a cooler choice than asphalt. Carry water on every outing, and never leave a dog in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Watch for heavy panting, drooling, stumbling, or a dog that suddenly stops and refuses to move. Those are signs of heat stress, not normal rest breaks, and they call for immediate shade, water, and a call to your veterinarian if symptoms do not ease quickly.

The heat has also compounded pressure on Las Vegas shelters this month.

We reported last week that The Animal Foundation entered a critical red capacity emergency and waived adoption fees for larger dogs as the shelter’s population climbed past 470.

This latest extension follows an earlier warning that was pushed through Sunday as monsoon moisture moved into the region.
