Las Vegas First Graders Just Gave Shelter Dogs the Cutest Reading Lesson Ever

First graders in Las Vegas recently had a very special audience for story time: a whole panel of rescue dogs at the Nevada SPCA.
During Nevada Reading Week, the shelter teamed up with local company G.C. Garcia, Inc. to help kids build reading confidence while giving adoptable pups some extra attention.
Over two days, about 160 first graders from Gene Ward and JT McWilliams elementary schools visited the Nevada SPCA to practice reading out loud to dogs and their volunteer handlers.
The idea behind the program was to create a relaxed, non‑judgmental environment where children could make mistakes, try again, and start to feel more comfortable with their reading skills.
For many students, it was a chance to step outside the classroom and discover that reading can be fun rather than stressful.

The “Reading to Dogs” event, now in its sixth year, was designed not just to support literacy, but also to build self‑esteem and basic public speaking skills.
When a child sat down with a book and a wagging tail, the pressure of performing in front of classmates faded away.
At the same time, students received a gentle introduction to responsible pet care and the role local shelters play in helping animals across the Las Vegas valley.
Nevada Reading Week, which ran March 2–6, is a statewide initiative that encourages schools and libraries to celebrate and promote reading through special activities and community partnerships.
Nevada SPCA’s “Paws and Pages” style program has become one of the most heartwarming examples, blending education and animal welfare in a way kids are likely to remember for a long time.
To extend the impact beyond the classroom visits, G.C. Garcia, Inc. also organized a pet supplies drive for Nevada SPCA through the end of March.
Community members were invited to donate much‑needed items via the company’s online drive page, helping the shelter care for the dogs who listened so patiently, and all of the other animals waiting for homes.
