The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas has replaced hours-long physical lines with a QR code virtual queue system, reports Fox5 Vegas. The new technology launched this month and allows potential adopters to join a virtual queue by scanning a QR code on the shelter’s front door before they even enter the building.
The shift addresses a problem that had people camping outside the shelter as early as 3 or 4 a.m. when highly desirable animals became available. Status monitors inside the facility now display wait times and queue positions, while QR codes on individual kennels show each animal’s age and background.
CEO Hilarie Grey demonstrated how the system adds transparency that was previously impossible, showing whether another visitor is already considering a specific animal before someone commits to waiting. Staff at the reception desk can also help visitors sign in manually for those who prefer not to scan codes themselves.
The results have been immediate. Malaya Houghton visited looking for a cat companion for her existing pet, scanned a kennel code for a cat named Charcoal, and completed the adoption without any hassle.
The Animal Foundation serves Clark County and the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, handling approximately 29,000 animals annually. The shelter can now process 50 to 60 adoptions daily with the streamlined system.
New pet owners receive 30 days of free live support for post-adoption questions. Shelters across the country are now looking to the Animal Foundation’s model for their own operations.
