Swimming for Second Chances – How One Ultra Swim Is Helping Rescue Dogs Find Relief and Joy

This May, one unique fundraising effort is turning endurance into impact, using every mile swum to help give those dogs something they don’t often get enough of: a break.

A 21-Mile Swim with a Purpose

From May 15 through May 18, a 21-mile Ultra Swim in Croatia will serve as the centerpiece of the Pawtastic Ultra Swim Fundraiser, an effort dedicated to supporting rescue dogs through movement, enrichment, and care.

But this isn’t about the challenge alone. The swim represents something much more tangible — funding real experiences for real dogs who need both physical and emotional support.

The goal is to raise $12,000, helping continue a program that directly benefits rescue dogs each month.

Why Swimming Matters for Rescue Dogs

Through Pawtastic Friends, dozens of rescue dogs are given the opportunity to participate in swim sessions at K9 Aquatics, where water becomes more than just exercise.

For some dogs, it’s pure joy — the kind that shows up instantly in wagging tails and excited energy. For others, especially those recovering from injury or dealing with anxiety, swimming provides low-impact therapy that helps build strength, mobility, and confidence.

In many cases, it’s one of the few moments where a dog can fully relax.

Each session costs about $35 per dog, and over the course of a year, the program supports roughly 70 dogs per month, totaling around $24,000 annually to maintain.

Pawtastic Friends is a Las Vegas-based nonprofit focused on improving the lives of rescue dogs through enrichment, advocacy, and direct support. Their work often centers on enhancing quality of life while dogs wait for adoption — filling gaps that traditional shelter resources may not always cover.
