Swimming for Second Chances – How One Ultra Swim Is Helping Rescue Dogs Find Relief and Joy

For many rescue dogs, the hardest part isn’t just where they came from — it’s the waiting.
Waiting in kennels. Waiting for a home. Waiting for a moment of relief from the stress, noise, and uncertainty of shelter life.
This May, one unique fundraising effort is turning endurance into impact, using every mile swum to help give those dogs something they don’t often get enough of: a break.

A 21-Mile Swim with a Purpose
From May 15 through May 18, a 21-mile Ultra Swim in Croatia will serve as the centerpiece of the Pawtastic Ultra Swim Fundraiser, an effort dedicated to supporting rescue dogs through movement, enrichment, and care.
But this isn’t about the challenge alone. The swim represents something much more tangible — funding real experiences for real dogs who need both physical and emotional support.
The goal is to raise $12,000, helping continue a program that directly benefits rescue dogs each month.
Why Swimming Matters for Rescue Dogs
Through Pawtastic Friends, dozens of rescue dogs are given the opportunity to participate in swim sessions at K9 Aquatics, where water becomes more than just exercise.
For some dogs, it’s pure joy — the kind that shows up instantly in wagging tails and excited energy. For others, especially those recovering from injury or dealing with anxiety, swimming provides low-impact therapy that helps build strength, mobility, and confidence.
Discover Your Dog’s Breed, Family, and History
The Embark Breed ID Test screens for 400+ dog breeds with up to 99% accuracy, giving you a detailed breakdown of your dog’s ancestry.
In many cases, it’s one of the few moments where a dog can fully relax.
Each session costs about $35 per dog, and over the course of a year, the program supports roughly 70 dogs per month, totaling around $24,000 annually to maintain.
The Role of Pawtastic Friends
Pawtastic Friends is a Las Vegas-based nonprofit focused on improving the lives of rescue dogs through enrichment, advocacy, and direct support. Their work often centers on enhancing quality of life while dogs wait for adoption — filling gaps that traditional shelter resources may not always cover.
Programs like these swim sessions are a reflection of that mission: simple in concept, but deeply impactful in practice.
Rather than large-scale, abstract initiatives, their approach is hands-on and immediate — providing experiences that reduce stress, support recovery, and help dogs show their best selves to potential adopters.
A Simple Way to Help
The fundraising ask is intentionally straightforward: sponsor a swim.
A $35 donation covers one session for one dog — one moment of movement, relief, and mental reset. Supporters can choose to fund a single swim or sponsor multiple dogs, depending on their capacity.
It’s a direct connection between contribution and outcome, something that resonates with many dog lovers who want to see exactly how their support is making a difference.

Why It Matters
Rescue work often focuses on the end goal — adoption — but what happens in the meantime matters just as much.
Programs like this recognize that quality of life during the waiting period can shape a dog’s future. A dog that feels stronger, calmer, and more confident is not only healthier but often more adoptable.
This fundraiser brings that reality into focus. It’s not just about miles swum — it’s about moments created.
And for a dog who’s been waiting, even one moment can make a difference.
