When Time Is Running Out, Furever Nevada Steps in for Senior Dogs

Walk through almost any animal shelter and you’ll notice the same thing. The puppies draw crowds, the young dogs get applications, and in the back, quiet and often confused, the senior dogs wait.

Most of them run out of time.

Furever Nevada exists specifically for those dogs.

Founded by Andrew Chiu, this Southern Nevada nonprofit pulls senior dogs from shelters, takes in owner surrenders, and rescues strays, giving them full veterinary care, a safe place to land, and in some cases, simply a dignified final chapter.

The organization operates out of a multi-acre property in Pahrump and a foster network spread throughout Las Vegas. And with plans to open a new 100+ acre facility, their capacity to help is still growing.

Chiu didn’t start Furever Nevada from a distance. He built it after years of shelter volunteering, watching older dogs get passed over again and again and, in too many cases, euthanized.

What he saw wasn’t a gap so much as a deliberate blind spot, and he decided to fill it. Where most rescues focus on younger, more adoptable dogs, Furever Nevada leans the other direction.

These are animals that often arrive with medical needs, limited mobility, or simply the stigma of age. Behind all of that, the organization argues, is something most people miss: calm companionship, deep loyalty, and a kind of love that only comes with time.

Not every dog they take in will be adopted. Some arrive in such poor condition that their time is already short.

Rather than let those dogs spend their final days in a loud, unfamiliar shelter, the team makes a different call. They give them peace.

That means comfort, consistent care, and people around them who treat their lives as worth something.

As Chiu describes it, the mission is to help “the forgotten and overlooked senior dogs in their final chapter,” and that includes the ones whose chapter is almost done.

The organization also fills a gap that doesn’t get much attention: what happens when an owner can no longer care for a senior dog with medical needs.

Surrendering a pet to a city shelter is often a last resort, and families frequently don’t know what comes next.

By accepting owner surrenders directly, Furever Nevada offers something genuinely rare in this space: reassurance.

Families know their dog will be treated, cared for, and given the best possible outcome, whether that’s a new home or a safe place to live out their remaining time.

Every dog they take in also frees up space in an already overwhelmed shelter system. It’s a ripple effect that extends their impact well beyond the dogs in their direct care.

Beyond the day-to-day work of rescue, Furever Nevada runs monthly meet-and-greet events at Tractor Supply Co. and participates in larger community fundraisers, including the upcoming Pins for Paws event at the Gold Coast Bowling Center.

Their most anticipated initiative in development is a “Seniors for Seniors” program, which would pair senior dogs with senior citizens in the community. It’s a natural match, offering companionship, routine, and connection on both sides.

Senior dogs are easy to walk past. Furever Nevada is betting that, given the chance, most people won’t.
