Las Vegas Shelters Brace for Fallout from Declining Tourism

Las Vegas Tourism Decline Could Impact Animal Welfare

Las Vegas, home to many and source of extravagant entertainment to others, is currently experiencing a significant downturn in visitor numbers. In March 2025, the city welcomed 3.39 million visitors, marking a 7.8% decrease compared to the same month in the previous year. This decline is part of a broader trend, with the first quarter of 2025 showing an overall visitation drop of nearly 7% year-over-year.

This reduction in tourism could have far-reaching implications beyond the hospitality and entertainment sectors. Animal welfare organizations in Nevada rely heavily on government assistance where relevant and the well-being of the greater community in the area to operate and successfully continue to save the lives of animals in need.  The downtrend in tourism is a concern with the potential impact on pet care and shelter funding. The state’s tourism industry significantly contributes to its economy, generating $98 billion in total economic impact in 2024, which accounted for 37% of Nevada’s gross domestic product. A decline in tourism revenue could lead to budget constraints, affecting public services, including animal shelters.

Rising living costs in Las Vegas have already led to an increase in pet surrenders with economic pressures creating a challenge for some residents to afford pet care, resulting in more animals being abandoned or surrendered to shelters. The combination of decreased tourism revenue and increased demand for shelter services could strain resources further, potentially impacting the well-being of countless animals.

Local governments are considering measures to address these challenges and talks had begun before the recent drop in tourism. For instance, discussions are underway to increase funding for animal shelters like The Animal Foundation, which currently receives $4.7 million annually from municipalities. However, with the state’s projected revenue decline of $191 million, allocating additional funds may prove difficult and these talks have already shown to be a prolonged discussion.

The situation underscores the interconnectedness of economic sectors and the importance of sustainable funding for animal welfare services. As Las Vegas navigates these economic challenges, the community’s support for local shelters and responsible pet ownership becomes increasingly vital.

For those interested in assisting, local animal welfare organizations are seeking volunteers, donations, and foster homes to help care for animals in need during this challenging period. Reach out to your preferred non-profit, visit and support their events and get involved in the conversation for ongoing animal rescue.
