The Animal Foundation Adopted Out 1,078 Pets in April, Topping 1,000 for a Second Straight Month

The Animal Foundation placed 1,078 pets into new homes during April, the second month in a row the Las Vegas shelter has sent more than 1,000 animals to adopters. The April count followed 1,014 adoptions in March at the valley’s largest open-admission shelter.

Beyond adoptions, the foundation reported that 462 animals went to foster homes in April. Another 389 animals left the shelter through rescue partners.

Together, those three paths moved more than 1,900 animals out of the shelter in a single month. That pace matters in a valley where intake regularly outstrips space.

The work leaned heavily on volunteers, with 348 people contributing a combined 4,785 hours in April, reports Fox5 Las Vegas. Shelter officials say they are always looking for more volunteers, donors, and foster families.

The foundation’s pet food pantry also stayed busy, helping 1,668 families keep their animals fed at home. Keeping pets with their owners reduces surrenders, which is one of the main pressures on shelter capacity.

The strong spring numbers come as The Animal Foundation continues to manage chronic crowding. Earlier this spring the shelter flew dogs and cats to rescue partners in Utah to ease overcrowding, a move that drew both praise and hard questions from local advocates.

The shelter has also rolled out a new QR code adoption system built to speed up how Las Vegas residents meet and take home shelter pets. The changes are part of a broader push to move animals through the system faster.

Even so, strong adoption totals do not tell the whole story, as an earlier look at the valley’s shelter numbers found that many dogs still face long stays or worse. Sustained adoption, foster, and rescue activity is what keeps those outcomes from getting harder.

Dog owners who want to help can adopt, foster, volunteer, or donate through The Animal Foundation. Foster homes are especially valuable heading into summer, when intake typically climbs and kennel space tightens.
