The Animal Foundation has taken in 1,132 animals between June 1 and June 12, with 338 of those arriving in just the last two days, and the shelter is now urging Las Vegas dog owners and residents to foster or adopt.
As reports 8 News Now, the shelter currently has 853 pets in its care and is housing incoming animals in emergency kennels due to the volume.
No appointment is needed to foster, and the shelter is holding a walk-in foster event this Friday, June 14, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The timing puts the shelter in a difficult position heading into summer, traditionally its busiest season. The Animal Foundation is the only open-admission shelter in the Clark County area, meaning it cannot turn animals away.
Two recent animal cruelty cases have added to the pressure.
The seizure of 35 dogs from the Working Dogs of Nevada facility brought dozens of animals into the shelter’s care in April, and 31 of those dogs remain there under a legal hold while the cruelty case works through the courts.
A separate cruelty case involving dozens of dogs in Mesquite further strained capacity earlier this spring.
Anyone who fosters through Friday’s event will receive all necessary supplies from the shelter, including food. Fosters who decide to adopt will pay no adoption fee.
The Animal Foundation is located at 655 N. Mojave Road in Las Vegas. More information on fostering is available at its website.
