Clark County Scraps Sam Boyd Emergency Animal Shelter Plan

Clark County has abandoned its plan to build an emergency pop-up animal shelter at the former Sam Boyd Stadium site.

The county had set aside $3 million for the temporary shelter. County officials say they are now exploring other options, reports 8 News Now.

That money was meant to provide quick relief for The Animal Foundation, Clark County’s only open admission shelter, which has struggled with severe overcrowding this year.

Commissioner Michael Naft said the funding will not disappear.

He said the dollars are “gonna continue to be allocated towards animal welfare issues here in this community” and will stay in Clark County, even as the county rethinks its approach.

The Sam Boyd shelter was meant to work alongside a larger, $39 million supplemental shelter already in design near Tropicana Avenue and the 215 Beltway.

That project is expected to span 45,000 square feet and house about 650 animals when it opens in August 2028, part of roughly $42 million in public spending on new shelter buildings.

Clark County commissioners are scheduled to discuss the shift in plans at a meeting on Tuesday, July 7.

The update comes as animal welfare advocates continue to raise concerns about the number of dogs, especially large breeds, entering local shelters.

The Animal Foundation has repeatedly hit crisis level intake this year. In June, the shelter took in more than 1,100 animals in less than two weeks, forcing staff to house dogs in emergency kennels.

For now, Clark County’s emergency shelter space will have to wait. The county has not announced a new timeline or location for the temporary capacity it originally promised.
