Las Vegas Speaks: 92% Support Tougher Laws After Airport Dog Case

A recent poll we ran on Nextdoor asked a simple question: Should Nevada toughen animal abandonment laws? The response was not surprising.

Out of 92 votes, 92% said yes, while just 8% said current laws are enough.

We posted the poll following widespread discussion about the dog abandonment case at Harry Reid International Airport, where a two-year-old goldendoodle was left tied to a ticket counter, in February.

According to police reports and local media coverage, the dog was left behind after airline staff told the owner additional paperwork was required for the animal to fly.

Investigators say the woman allegedly told airline employees to call animal control because she did not want to miss her flight.

The dog was later found tethered to a metal baggage sizer near the airline counter.

Police cited the woman for animal abandonment and related offenses.

The incident sparked strong reactions across Las Vegas and among animal lovers nationwide.

But one detail surprised many people following the story.

For roughly ten days after the incident, the woman accused of abandoning the dog could still have legally reclaimed him while the animal was being held.

That revelation highlighted a legal gray area that many residents say should change.

Under Nevada Revised Statutes 574, abandoning an animal is a crime.

However, pets are still legally considered property under the law, which can create situations where shelters must hold animals for a reclaim period before they can be adopted out.

That feels out of step with public expectations.

The results of our poll suggest the Las Vegas community overwhelmingly believes that intentionally abandoning an animal should carry stronger legal consequences.

One Nextdoor commenter summed up that sentiment clearly:

“Responsible pet ownership is a lifelong commitment. Strengthening laws to better discourage abandonment would help deter neglect and reinforce responsible ownership.”
Mel J., Pavillione Point

Whether that means harsher penalties, automatic forfeiture of ownership rights, or clearer rules around reclaim periods is now part of a broader conversation.

What is clear from the poll is that many locals believe Nevada’s laws should better reflect how seriously the community views animal abandonment.
