Treasure, the three-month-old puppy found abandoned near a dumpster in Henderson, is being treated at a critical care veterinary hospital after his condition worsened over the weekend, reports 8 News Now.
Police are now searching for the person or people responsible for dumping him.
The puppy was found on July 14 at the dumpster site of Valley Ranch Animal Hospital, near Valle Verde Drive and the 215 Beltway.
Officials now say Treasure’s injuries are worse than initially reported. He was found with two broken legs, a broken jaw, rocks inside his intestines, and severe malnourishment.
Treasure is expected to undergo surgery this week to repair his broken legs. Hearts Alive Village, the rescue caring for him, says his medical bills could climb into the thousands of dollars, and the organization is accepting donations toward his care.
The case has officially become an animal cruelty investigation. Amy Clatterbuck, Director of Operations at Hearts Alive Village, said the rescue is working with Valley Ranch Animal Hospital and other nearby businesses to identify who left him there.
Clatterbuck said the location makes accidental circumstances unlikely, noting there was no way for the puppy to reach the area on his own. She added that investigators are reviewing camera footage from the area.
When Treasure was first found, there were no leads on who dumped him or who his previous owner was. Investigators hope surveillance video and public tips will change that.
Abandoning an animal is illegal in Nevada. Shelters, rescues, and animal control agencies across the valley offer surrender options and support for owners who can no longer care for a pet.
Anyone with information about who abandoned Treasure is asked to call Henderson Animal Protection Services at (702) 267-4970.
Las Vegas dog owners who want to support Hearts Alive Village’s medical cases can also take part in the tattoo fundraiser at Silver Squid Ink benefiting the rescue this July.
