Washoe County Regional Animal Services is wrapping up a two-week free dog licensing promotion today, Saturday, June 13, with the office open until 3 p.m.
Dog owners who visit in person before closing can get a free one-year license for their dog, with all late fees waived, as long as they bring proof of a current rabies vaccination.
Why Officials Are Pushing Licenses Before July 4
The promotion was timed specifically to get more dogs wearing current ID ahead of the Fourth of July, which animal services agencies consistently identify as the busiest week of the year for lost pets. Fireworks drive dogs to bolt, and a license tag is often the fastest way to reunite a dog with its owner.
Each year, Washoe County says hundreds of dogs are reunited with their owners because they were wearing a current license tag.
What You Need and Where to Go
To claim a free license, dog owners must visit Washoe County Regional Animal Services in person at 2825 Longley Lane, Suite A, in Reno. Today’s Saturday hours run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The phone number for questions is 775-353-8900.
Proof of a current rabies vaccination is required. Dogs that have never been licensed, those with expired licenses, and dogs eligible for renewal within 30 days all qualify.
What the License Includes
Washoe County’s licensing program runs through DocuPet and includes the HomeSafe 24/7 lost pet recovery service at no extra charge. License holders can also manage their pet’s profile online, upload documents, and choose between a standard tag or an upgraded designer tag.
Dog licensing is required by law in Washoe County for any dog over four months old living in a congested area. Failure to comply can result in fines between $100 and $400.
Regular license fees after the promotion return to $16 per year for spayed or neutered dogs, $30 per year for unaltered dogs, and half-price for residents 60 and older.
