Washoe County Launches Searchable Database of Animal Cruelty Convictions

Washoe County Regional Animal Services has launched an online database that lets the public, shelters, and rescue groups search for people convicted of certain animal welfare offenses, reports This Is Reno.

The county built the resource with the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office. It currently lists more than 160 individuals.

Entries generally cover qualifying convictions dating to 2023. A limited number of earlier cases involving serious offenses are also included.

Animal Services Director Shyanne Schull said a conviction on record with one agency may be unknown to another organization deciding where to place an animal.

She described the database as “another tool to help protect animals from future harm.”

County officials say the goal is to help shelters, rescue groups, and residents make informed decisions when placing animals in homes.

For dog owners, that means a new way to check a name before a rescue dog is adopted out or rehomed.

Officials cautioned that the database does not include every animal welfare case in Washoe County. It should not be treated as a complete record of local offenders.

Nevada Animal Advocates, a Las Vegas nonprofit, already operates the state’s first independent animal abuse registry, built from verified court records.

Unlike the Washoe County database, it lists people who have been charged as well as convicted, and it removes names if charges are dropped or a person is found not guilty.

The group’s founder, John Waudby, has since expanded the effort nationally through the U.S. Paw Registry.

Waudby also filed a formal complaint with the Nevada Attorney General’s Office and the State Bar after the Working Dogs of Nevada case collapsed.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson later defended his office’s handling of animal abuse cases, saying most cases end in plea deals.
